Controversial 10 Year Old Vogue Model: Meet Thylane Loubry Blondeau

August 4, 2011 - By Joni Ricard

Wow or Cringe? While the fashion industry is going crazy for this precocious young model, others are cringing over the oversexualized little girl.

Thylane Loubry Blondeau is a Parisian model, and yes, she is only 10 years old. As her gorgeous looks suggests, she has great genes from father, Patrick Blondeau, a former soccer player, and mother, Veronika Loubry, a newscaster-turned-fashion-designer.

At such a young age, Thylane has had a fashion career that wannabe models could only dream of. She’s been in multiple ad campaigns and fashion shows. In fact, at age 4, Thylane was already part of Jean-Paul-Gaultier’s Spring fashion show.

She graces the latest issue of French Vogue (yes, the grown-up Vogue) in very adult-like poses, full make-up, and high heels, setting off a whirlwind of angry protests and fashion praises along the way. Shari Miles-Cohen, senior director of women’s programs for the American Psychological Association tells ABC, “We don’t want kids to grow up too fast. We want them to be able to develop physically, emotionally, psychologically and socially at appropriate rates for their age.”

And maybe that was the main purpose behind the Vogue spread, captioning the photo with phrases such as, “Quel maquillage à quel âge?” (What makeup at what age?) But then again, people are balking at the very images that the magazine considers to be ‘in vogue.’ Paul Miller, a Psychology Professor in ASU explains, “The research clearly shows that the fashion industry affects girls and women’s images of themselves and their self-esteem if they do not meet the industry ‘image’.”

Work of art? Crossing the line? The debate over age and social control will continue as lines are crossed. Societal norms are always in the eye of the beholder.

Check out how Thylane’s mom Veronika Loubry responded (here) and what other people are saying:
