4-Year-Old Boy Shot and Killed in a Playground
4-year-old Lloyd Morgan was shot and killed by a stray bullet that fatally wounded him as he played in a Bronx playground last Sunday night.
Over 100 people gathered at the Forest Houses basketball courts for the “First Annual Ghetto Angels Basketball Tournament” which was held in memory of a 15-year-old girl who was stabbed to death a year ago. Unfortunately, the basketball game erupted in violence as two men exchanged gunfire over a scuffle. With the sounds of shots fired into the air, people ran for cover. Unfortunately, Lloyd was unable to escape and was caught in the middle of the crossfire.
“When my friend didn’t see her kid, she panicked,” a family friend recalled the Lloyd’s mom’s terror. “Then she saw him on the floor, shot.”
Lloyd was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Two men were also injured in the shooting, although there is no conclusion if they were involved in the original fight or were simply bystanders.
This is the second child to be shot in the city’s playgrounds over the past two weeks. On July 8, 3-year-old Isaiah Rivera was shot in the legs by a stray bullet, as he was playing with an elephant spray shower in the Roosevelt Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant. With this chain of violent incidents, Assemblyman Eric Stevenson is urging people to restore the peace in the neighborhood
“We can’t tolerate this any longer. Those who know these people need to step forward,” Stevenson forcefully said. “It’s not about snitching. It’s about protecting lives of 4-year-olds. And those who know in this community need to step forward.”
“Those who are doing these horrendous crimes are going to be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he added. “You’re taking the lives of young people. You will be taken out of this community.”
Sadly enough, this is not the first time that Lloyd’s dad, Lloyd Morgan Sr. will be burying a child.
“This is my second child that’s been taken away from me,” Morgan Sr. said as he recalled a painful incident in 2007 when his ex-girlfriend Shelly Courcelle killed their newborn daughter through strangulation.
With the rising slew of gun-related crimes, it’s fast-becoming obvious that the status quo is not working.
