A Indian man was unrepentant, as he surrendered himself to a police station in Northwestern India. With a ceremonial sword, he beheaded his daughter, and took the severed head and bloody weapon to the police.

Oghad Singh accused his daughter, Manju Kanwar of dishonoring her family by living a “modern” lifestyle. He further blamed her for making it hard for her two unmarried sisters to find their own respective husbands.

Her exact crime? After two years of marriage, Manju left her husband who she met through an arranged marriage. She moved back home and started dating several men. Her father was vehemently opposed to this lifestyle which he found “disgusting”. And when Manju decided to elope a few weeks ago, it was the final straw for Oghad who promptly killed his daughter.

Villagers were shocked and saddened by Oghad’s actions. The father had paraded his daughter’s head around the village and explained what he had done.

“He told me that he took the sword out, and when the daughter was all alone in the house he beheaded her with a single stroke and the head fell on the ground,” recalled Narayan Singh, a relative of the family.

Narayan took the deranged father to the police station and coerced him to give himself up.

“It was a ghastly sight,” officer Ranjit Singh recounted seeing the father with the head and sword. “Oghad admitted immediately that he killed his daughter because she had earned a bad name for the family.”

While shocking, this isn’t the first instance of parents taking action against their daughters for their non-traditional lifestyles. Just this year, a victim’s sister testified against her parents who allegedly killed her sister after they wanted to put an end to her “Western” ways.
