Four-year-old Rena was innocently sitting on her mom’s lap in their balcony in Aleppo, Syria when a sniper bullet ripped through her cheek.

A CNN crew was nearby as a man got into the car to rush the girl across Aleppo’s front lines to a government controlled medical facility. Unfortunately, Rena died later after choking from the bullet which lodged into her throat.

News reports claim that over 5,000 people have been killed in Syria in August, making it the deadliest month, since the beginning of the instability and fighting in March 2011.
