Dubbed the Worst National Anthem Ever
When 11-year-old Harper Gruzins sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a MLS game in Dallas last Saturday, she couldn’t have known that it would be called “the worst national anthem rendition ever.”
Receiving a few boos in the crowd that day, the Twitter community was even less subtle, calling her performance “tragic” and taunting her off-key voice.
“What I feel like doing is just unplug her,” her father, Karlis Gruzins said of the harsh criticism. “Take her out of everything and just protect her. Hide her. Keep her from people hurting her.”
Harper explained that while it wasn’t her best performance, the horns at the stadium rattled her. “I started to sing and was like, ‘That’s the wrong key.’ Once you start the national anthem, you don’t want to start over and humiliate yourself,” she said.
This isn’t the first time that the national anthem was botched during a huge public performance. If celebrities and professionals like Michael Bolton, Steven Tyler, and Christina Aguilera can fumble through it, think how an 11-year-old must feel.
