Father and Daughter Die Jumping off Cliff to Escape from Wildfire
A family of five jumped off a seaside cliff to escape a wildfire in Spain.
A French family, along with other tourists were forced out of their vacation homes Sunday night as a wildfire raged in a town close to Portbou. The fires started late Sunday and hit several areas of the Catalonia region, destroying over 35 square miles of land.
Unfortunately, as the tourists fled from the fire, the French family got separated from the rest of the group and ended up trapped at a cliff with no other way out.
“The fire started to close in on them and they couldn’t climb up or climb down,” the deputy explained. “The only way out was to jump into the sea.”
With the steep 50 meter drop, the father died after landing on rocks and one of the 15-year-old girls drowned at sea. The mother is in critical condition with a major back injury while the two other kids didn’t suffer any serious injuries.
The tourists who fled to Portbou suffered minor injuries as they ran down the hillsides. More than 80 teams have been deployed in an attempt to douse the fires.
