Girl Offers Piggybank In Return for Stolen Puppy
10-year-old Marissa Mabanag may be reunited with her stolen pup after offering her entire piggybank in exchange for the safe return of her 5-month-old buddy Meeko.
While thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of property from her family home, all Marissa wants back is their family pet.
“I’m begging from a mother’s heart to bring our puppy back to my daughter,” Marissa’s mother, Marie Mabanag pleaded through reporters. “That was a piece of her heart that is missing. It was an unnecessary pain to go through. We don’t care about anything else. It’s just the puppy for her.”
“I really do hope that those people who did it do have a heart or know a little girl that they can understand this to,” she also added. “When they stole the puppy I don’t think they knew what they were doing. They were taking someone’s heart.”
The police and fire stations are offering $5,000 for the safe return of the pup, and the city is adding another $1,000 to the mix. Adding Marissa’s generous piggybank offer, the reward has topped over $6,000 for Meeko.
This is the second time that the Mabanag’s home has been robbed, as thieves broke into their home last year. The city has blamed budget cuts for the increase in burglaries in the area.
“Word is out on the street and they know it, that we don’t have enough officers to patrol our streets, we don’t even have a burglary unit, we don’t have detectives,” City council member Ash Kalra explained.
And while it may take awhile to resolve the budget cuts, all the family wants for now is to be reunited with their beloved pup. A tipster called in last Thursday claiming to have spotted Meeko in the mall.
Meeko joined the Mabanag family last June and is named her after the raccoon in “Pocahontas.”
