High School Senior Sings His Way Off the University Waitlist
Lawrence Yong, a high school senior from Granada Hills was initially waitlisted for the University of Michigan. Fortunately, he has just sung his way into a spot in the class of 2016.
“I had already written an essay for my application and I thought that maybe it wasn’t enough to convey to the university who I was. I thought the video was a way to put a face to the application,” Yong said.
And so the teen decided to sing his version of Jackson 5′s “I Want You Back.”
“I thought it was also an appropriate song,” he further explained. “Michael Jackson is asking this girl to give him one more chance and I was kind of asking the university to give me a chance as well.”
Yong posted the video on Youtube and it quickly became viral, so much so that the University of Michigan finally extended him an admissions letter last June 6.
“I got it when I had just woken up, so I was groggy and, but, after that I was really ecstatic and completely shocked,” he said.
Admissions officers reportedly saw the video and told AnnArbor.com that part of the admissions criteria is a student’s explicit interest in the school. Fortunately for Yong, he demonstrated just that.
And as his song goes: “Oh Michigan, give me one more chance, to show you that I love you. Won’t you please let me into your school. Oh how I dream to be a Wolverine, Michigan you’re unlike anything that I’ve seen.”
