Marathon Runner Gives Birth; Didn’t Know She was Pregnant
As someone who has gone through pregnancy, it’s hard to believe that 9 months of physical changes would go by unnoticed. Apparently, such is the case for half-marathon runner Trish Staine who was surprised after being told she was in labor.
Staine, now a mom-of-three thought that her intense back pain was due to her rigorous marathon training schedule. The mom had no idea she was pregnant prior to the birth of her child. She had not gained significant weight or felt any fetal movement. At the same time, her husband had a vasectomy years before.
“I said `no, no, that’s impossible’,” Staine recalled as they broke the news. “I definitely thought I was done having kids.”
“I had a sore back Sunday evening. I had taken a hot shower and was dealing with it,” Staine recalled her labor. “Monday morning, I woke up and had more back pain, and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle.”
After a few hours of trying to deal with the pain, Staine’s husband finally decided to call an ambulance.
“I felt like I was dying. I didn’t know what was going on,” Staine added.
As they got to the ER, the couple was stunned when the staff found a fetal heartbeat. Mira, short for miracle was born shortly after, weighing in at 6 lbs., 6 oz. and 18.9 inches.
This is the third child for the couple who have a son, 11 and daughter, 7. John also has three boys from a previous marriage.
At this point, you would think Trish or moreso, her husband John would be pros at spotting pregnancy symptoms.
“He’s still in shock,” the new mom said. “Everybody is teasing him.”
