Miranda Kerr Incites Backlash for Opinions on Natural Childbirth
New mom Miranda Kerr is on the hot seat after her interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
The Victoria’s Secret model explained that she opted to have a natural childbirth (birth without an epidural) after watching baby-bonding videos. Kerr felt that babies born naturally are able to instantaneously breastfeed, as opposed to babies who she felt were “drugged up”.
“They showed babies right after the epidural, and that didn’t happen,” Kerr commented about her choice for Baby Flynn. “The baby was a little bit drugged up, and I was like, ‘Well I don’t want that.’ I wanted to give him the best possible start in life I could.”
After her article went live, the public was outraged by her statements. “I don’t care if you had an epidural, if you had it naturally, a water birth, at home or in the hospital,” explained Mary Fischer, a writer for TheStir.com. “Women just need to respect each other.”
“Being a supermodel doesn’t make you an expert,” added another commenter.
While Kerr could have chosen her words more carefully, she is entitled to her own opinion as a mom. Thus far, there have been no proven long-term consequences based on birthing methods, so the process or amount of pain a mother chooses to experience is absolutely personal. Bottomline, people should be more concerned about what happens to a child post-birth versus the few hours of labor… which while beautiful is not a few decades as long.
