Mom Buys Billboard Ad for Daughter’s Prom

April 21, 2012 - By Anthony Konrad

Things are always bigger in Texas. And for this little town of Kileen,  one mom decided to go all out for her daughter’s bid for prom queen.

Along the highway, Tammy Day, Brandy’s mom had rented out a pink, rotating billboard that read “Vote Brandy Day for Prom Queen!”

Unfortunately for Tammy, things didn’t go as planned. Her daughter not only lost the contest, but she is now also getting teased and harrassed in school.

Brandy campaigned seriously for for prom queen. She hung hundreds of fliers around the school campus and together with her mom, they canvassed the neighborhood to solicit funds and support from local businesses. During one of their “campaign runs”, Brandy joked that they should get a billboard.

“I said, ‘If you’re going to do it, give it 150%,’” Tammy responded, as they turned that joke into a reality.

Despite the public backlash against this over-the-top gesture, Tammy said she has no regrets, as she wanted to do something special for her daughter who was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy when she was 3-years-old.

“They may consider it overboard, but I don’t look at it like that,” she explained. “No one body wanted to hear the whole purpose of it. She’s never had a shining moment. Most of her life has been filled with pain and she keeps smiling.”

“I felt like it was an attainable goal for her,” the mom also added. “Physically, mobility-wise, against normal children, she doesn’t stand a chance. She can’t do track, she can’t swim. She plays tennis and has to stay in some kind of sport to keep physically fit because of her mild CP, but I felt like she chose this [prom queen campaign] as something that she thought that she could stand a chance on because all it would require was for her to present a picture for herself, but it appears that it’s backfiring.”

Brandy is still excited to attend her prom despite these setbacks.

As for the proud mom, Tammy spent approximately $1,000 for her daughter’s prom experience.
