Nepalese Mother Accused of Witchcraft, Burned Alive
Dhegani Mahato, a Nepalese widow and mother-of-two was accused of witchcraft and burned alive.
Bikram Mahato, a relative of Dhegani accused her of using “magic” to make his son-in-law sick. Additionally, Bikram believed Dhegani used witchcraft to kill his grandson who died years ago from drowning.
As a response to these suspicions, a group of ten people attacked Dhegani last Friday. Among the attackers were Bikram, two shamans, five women, and even an 8-year-old boy. The group stoned and beat her, before they finally doused her in kerosene and lit her on fire. The entire murder was witnessed by Dhegani’s 9-year-old daughter.
According to CNN, neighbors contacted police, but it was too late by the time they arrived.
“Those arrested have confessed to their crime and will be charged with murder,” the police chief said.
As payment to the family, the Nepalese government has agreed to give the children 1 million rupees (approximately $14,000).
