A newborn baby girl from India has been rejected by her birth parents who are instead seeking custody of a baby boy that was accidentally handed over to them.

Last week, two babies, a boy and a girl were born at around the same time in a hospital in India. With the ensued confusion, a baby boy was initially handed to a couple, before the hospital quickly realized their mistake.

Unfortunately, Chain Singh and his wife Poonam Kanwar are now refusing to accept their own baby girl, even after blood tests have proven their parentage. Instead, the couple is trying to fight the boy’s actual parents for custody of the baby boy.

Boys have often been preferred in India, making female foeticide a common phenomenon. In fact, next to China, India’s ratio of boys to girls is one of the worst in the world.
