Student Finds Sunken Treasure During School Cleanup Day
As they say, someone else’s trash is another person’s treasure.
As part of their school cleanup day, a few sixth-graders volunteered to pick up trash around a local lake in Oakland. As if the world was thanking them for their efforts, one 11-year-old pulled up two bags which contained an assortment of antique items, including jewelry, coins, and military medals.
“I think [these] belong to different people and are from different parts of the world. There were rings of different sizes. Coins with pictures of Christ and others with a picture of a menorah,” the treasure-finder explained.
Police were called to the scene, with the thought that the items may have been stolen. “I think someone was trying to steal it, and someone was on their tail, and they dumped it there,” the student also added. “It’s not the ideal hiding spot if you really stop to think about it.”
These students help clean the lake every Thursday as part of a continuing community service project. “We find a lot of stuff, a lot of tennis balls and things, but no, never that,” one student tells a local paper. “It was basically the best thing we ever found in there.”
Unfortunately for the kids, they can’t keep the loot, as police have confiscated the items for a possible investigation.
