Student Returns Check for a Half Billion Dollars
Every month, Allen Smith, 22 receives a monthly Veteran Affairs dependency check for $650. This month, due to an unknown error, the check was made out to $690,000,000…yes, that’s a half-billion dollars.
Without skipping a beat, the college student returned the check to the VA office.
“He immediately, immediately went to the VA officer at Fort Benning, turned in the check,” Smith’s mom, Patricia Attwood Smith tells WTVM.
The student receives a dependency check in honor of his father who died while serving in the US Air Force. He has been using the money to help alleviate some of his expenses from college.
They’re unsure what could have caused the error but it’s either a possible misprint or computer hacking issue.
