Teen Finds Human Finger Inside Sandwich

May 18, 2012 - By Hyacinth Therese

14-year-old Ryan Hart was enjoying his roast beef sandwich when he discovered something other than roast beef inside the bun.

An Arby’s employee allegedly cut off her finger with a meat slicer while prepping Ryan’s meal. Alarmed about her injury, she abruptly left her station without telling anyone. Unfortunately, the other employees were unaware of her plight (or her lost finger) and continued to serve the dish.

Unknowingly, Ryan was eating his sandwich when he bit into a piece he described as rubbery. He spit out the item and saw a severed part of a human finger, measuring one-inch long and a quarter-inch thick.

“I was like, ‘that’s got to be a finger,’” Ryan recounted. “It was just nasty.”

“Somebody loses a finger and you keep sending food out the window,” angrily explained Ryan’s mom, Jamie Vail. “I can’t believe that.”

The mom also added that since the incident her son was traumatized and hasn’t been able to eat or sleep.

Arby’s released a statement: “Arby’s wants to reassure customers that we are committed to providing quality food in a safe and healthy environment. We are deeply concerned and apologetic to the guest involved in this unfortunate incident….An isolated and unfortunate accident occurred in a franchisee’s Jackson, Michigan restaurant in which an employee was injured. Upon learning of the incident, the franchisee’s restaurant team shut down food production and thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the restaurant. The franchisee fully cooperated with the Health Department during the investigation, and the restaurant was given the approval to remain open.”
