Teen’s Sacrifice Saves Toddler’s Life

May 22, 2012 - By Susan Lim

18-year-old Briana Delcampo decided to make a sacrifice and donate a kidney, so a toddler can live a normal life.

Isaiah Hernandez, now 1 1/2, was born with advanced kidney failure. With his deteriorating health, Isaiah’s parents were desperate to find a live kidney donor.

“He needs a kidney transplant because being on dialysis is very hard on the body, especially for a baby,” mother, Terri Hernandez explained.

Unfortunately, with the limited number of possible donors, the family ran into issues with finding a match for little Isaiah. Delcampo, a family friend heard about the dilemma and didn’t hesitate. “The first thing that came to mind was: I would love to be tested,” she said.

In a lucky twist of fate, Delcampo was an exact match.

While some family and friends were worried about her decision, Delcampo was resolute. “I told them that I wanted to do it. Nobody was going to change my mind,” she said.

“I’m very excited, happy. I love her. She’s really part of the family now, forever,” Isaiah’s mom said when she heard the news.

While Delcampo is a bit nervous about her surgery next month, she fully believes in her decision. “I’ve lived 18 years and I’ve got to do things. I’ve got to travel and do things that people wish they could do and I just want him to grow up and be able to do the things I did. You know, live a normal life.”
