Time Cover Mom Speaks Up

May 13, 2012 - By itsbits

The latest Time Magazine cover, featuring 26-year-old Jamie Grumet breastfeeding her nearly 4-year-old son Aram went viral last week, sparking a series of outraged supporters and opponents.

The Times article focused on the theory of attachment parenting, part of which includes extended breastfeeding.  “We knew exactly what we were going to get in to,” Grumet said firmly, adding that she herself was breast-fed until she was 6.

The mom also defends herself by blaming the negative feelings on the actual Time photo. “This isn’t how we breast-feed at home, it’s more of a cradling, nurturing situation,” she explained. “I do understand why Time chose this picture because…it did create such a media craze to get the dialogue talking.”

Going further in her defense of attachment parenting, Grumet responds to questions about her relationship with her husband. “I don’t feel like that takes away from my personal life. My relationship with husband is very, very important to me, and I think that it gives my children a strong bond, too,” she added. “A lot of people say, you know, you can’t really be intimate with your husband if you’re co-sleeping and … those are kind of myths, too.”

While Grumet hopes that her son will stop breast-feeding before he’s 5, she will make him make that decision.

“You need to do what’s best for your baby and for your own family,” she said. “You can take some of Dr. Sears’ attachment parenting philosophies and maybe not others and that’s OK; you’re not a bad parent. Your child will still be OK.
