Born with a genetic mutation in her ears, 10-year-old girl Sammie Hicks just received a ‘bionic ear’ that has allowed her to regain her hearing.

Sammie has lived most of her life without being able to hear. That was, until, in recent news, she learned that her insurance would cover the cost of a cochlear which would enable her to regain her hearing.

In a video diary of her journey to finally activating her ‘bionic ear’, Sammie recently released a touching video of the moment when she finally regains hearing.

“It sounds weird,” she said before bursting into tears. “Hey! I sound weird.”

“I asked her why she cried,” her father, Brian Hicks recounted. “She said, ‘It was overwhelming. But the reason I really cried? I couldn’t believe all the stuff I was missing.’”

“If you couldn’t hear something that everyone else did then you get it and you can hear it and then your whole world is different,” she said, right before her surgery.

Sammie’s 8-year-old brother, Jacob also suffers from the same genetic mutation and will be getting his own bionic ear soon, too.
